Worldofmyown’s “L’appel du Vide” Runway Recap
On May 5, friends and family of Sydney Wekstein gathered in the basement of a church in Bushwick for the runway show of fashion brand and collective Worldofmyown’s “Lappel du Vide”–french for Call of the Void–collection.
The collection consisted of twelve looks, ranging from patchwork button-ups to patterned tights and platform boots to a baby blue two-piece gown adorned with silver embellishments. Runway makeup was supplied by Apple Doll, the up-and-coming Los Angeles-based brand, which Iris Apatow has become somewhat of a covergirl for.
The surreal space of Gymnopeide, the show’s venue, mirrors the brand’s eclectic textile designs; old furniture set below basketball hoops; flowers and charcuterie boards sprinkled in amongst DJ sets and men giving tattoos; work from local artists hanging alongside lamps illuminating vibrant colors.
Just before the show started, the lights dimmed, and the collective broadcasted their short film showcasing the Lappel du Vide line. Giving hints of Alice in Wonderland, which Wekstein draws inspiration from, a girl wakes up in an unfamiliar place with a ringing telephone by her side. The void was calling, and she picked up–transporting her into a strange dimension.
If one thing is clear from the presentation–Worldofmyown is not merely a fashion brand, but a beautiful interpretation of a dream, serving as an escape from the tangible limitations of everyday life. It’s a reminder all we want to be and experience is possible if we follow Wekstein’s ethos of dream it, make it, share it.
